When I was a teenager there was a social club in the area for youth called the One-Way Inn. It was a hangout for youth to gather and talk and listen to music.
I was thinking about the One-Way Inn the other day and then comparing its title to our society. The idea today of there being only ‘one way’ is almost always rejected. In our enlightened society to view only one way is often considered intolerant, inconsiderate, disrespectful and narrow-minded.
Yet that is exactly what Jesus said. His statements were considered dogmatic and therefore they are considered in our modern society by many intolerant, inconsiderate, disrespectful and narrow-minded.
I have to laugh on occasion when I see someone challenge the statements of Jesus and try to remain pluralistic. Pluralism hold the view the there are many paths to God. That each religious viewpoint holds the same valid truth. Unfortunately to state such a thing shows a profound lack of knowledge in the statements of Christ or the Bible itself.
Defenders of pluralism often attack the Christian messenger not Christ Himself. As if the Christian wrote the contents of the Bible. They also often try to change the meaning of a passage that they do not agree with. The other day I actually heard someone say that Jesus’ statement in John 14:6 “…I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” was not what He actually meant.
Now unless a person is creating their own Bible by cherry picking, reinterpreting, or cutting out large swaths of scripture, denying the exclusivity of Christ guts the transforming power of the Christian faith and renders Christianity powerless and useless. It becomes something other than Christianity. This is a very dangerous viewpoint to hold, yet it is espoused by a large part of our society.
The Bible is fraught with passages claiming the exclusivity of Christ, not just a few. It is the central message. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews spent the first ten chapters of the letter outlining that Jesus is the only one that is able to save from sin. In Acts 4:12 Peter confirmed Jesus’ narrow point of view by telling us that there is salvation in no one else.
With Jesus there is only one way. You either accept the narrow truth that He is the only way, or you do not. There is no in-between, no compromise, no concession on Jesus’ statements.
My request for you, are willing to accept what the Bible says about Jesus? As being our only Savior? That forgiveness of sins is only found through him?
This point may not be popular in our society, but it is true.
